STANDING COMMITTEES:

Article 44 of the UAW Constitution mandates local standing committees.

The standing committees are the "tools" through which the politics and programs of the UAW are put to work. Standing committees serve not only their local but many times the community as well. They can fulfill their responsibilities by providing and implementing activities that lead to a stronger more dynamic local union.

Bylaw-Constitution and Bylaw Committee:

As spelled out in Article 44 of the International Constitution: The Constitution and Bylaws Committee of each local union shall perform the duties of setting up and monitoring the local union bylaws, along with following the approval procedures. This Committee is charged with the responsibility of submitting proposed changes to the International Constitutional Conventions.

Citizenship-Legislative Committee:

Is the in-plant political legislative arm of the local union and is the vital workplace political activator. While CAP priorities are developed by Convention action-implementation by the National CAP Department through the Region and our network of CAP Councils- the Citizenship/legislative Committee is the basic link with our members at work in assisting the implementation of registration and get-out-the-vote drives, dollar drives, letter writing campaigns, publicizing the issues and positions of public officials; encouraging special groups in the plant-youth, women, minorities-to become active.

Civil Rights Committee:

Serves as guardian over the Local Union’s interest to assure members full rights regardless of religion, race, creed, color, sex, political affiliation, national origin, age, or handicap. The committee informs members of steps and procedures, including filing of complaints and hearings, whenever a member or members believe their rights have been violated, either by management or other union members. The Committee, in cooperation with the UAW Civil Rights Department, works toward the elimination of discrimination in the workplace, the community and the nation. Services are provided by the Civil Rights Department of the International Union.

Communications Committee:

A special committee formed by the President to undertake detailed communications projects when necessary. They will also assist the Publications Committee when the need arises.

Community Services Committee:

Performs the important task of getting help for members and their families in time of need. These committees work through public and private organizations to assure that these problems faced by the members in emergency situations get the needed help. These are the committees that generally handle the strike insurance benefits when local unions are forced to use their economic strength. Service in this area is provided by the Community Services Department of the International Union.

Conservation Committee:

The Committee works on: federal, state, and local environmental issues. They also keep the membership informed on environmental legislation.

Consumer Affairs/Union Label:

Strives to keep the membership informed on lending, truth in packaging, truth in advertising, labels on products, etc., so that each member can obtain maximum value for monies spent, thereby diminishing the devastating causes of inflation.

The committee helps to emphasize the importance of supporting those goods produced in union shops, by union members under the union-won working conditions. This committee also helps bring to the attention of our members those products produced under the non-union conditions and by anti-labor manufactures.

Services in this area are provided by the Consumer Affairs Department of the International Union.

Education Committee:

The committee is responsible for putting into operation the education mandate adopted by the UAW convention delegates. Available to the committee are films, material, outlines, and guides developed to help them inform the membership on issues, train new stewards/grievance handlers, leaders, and mobilize grater solidarity behind the program of the union. Services in this area are provided by the Education Department of the International Union

Election Committee:

The Election Committee is a democratically elected committee that serves for a specific term. The rules governing those serving on the committee are outlined in the constitution. The committee will supervise all general elections and contract votes held during their term.

Publicity and Publications Committee:

Publishes flyers, bulletins, newspapers and/or newsletters to encourage members to become more active and to keep them informed of local plant and union news, union-won rights, leadership goals and committee activities, as well as to get out the facts on issues the International and local leadership think are important. The Committee also works to improve the union’s image in the media. The International Union Public Relations Department sends out press releases and offers a regular press packet, technical help and other services through the Local Union Press Association (LUPA) and the Michigan Labor Press (MLP).

Recreation Committee:
