CITIZENSHIP/LEGISLATIVE COMMITTEE

·        Davis-Bacon Act Suspended:  On September 8, President Bush issued a proclamation suspending the Davis-Bacon Act in the areas affected by hurricane Katrina.  Enacted in 1931, it requires federal contractors on federally funded construction contracts to pay workers at least prevailing wages in the area where the work is conducted.  President Bush has done nothing more than use the horrific national tragedy to once again advance his anti-worker agenda and eliminate a protection for workers the corporate backers of the White House have long wanted to remove.  Please contact your representatives urging Congress to force Bush to rescind his suspension of the Davis-Bacon Act.  From the Regional Director, Don Oetman.

·        Thailand Free Trade Deal:  The Bush administration is continuing to negotiate with Thailand on a free trade deal.  In 2003, the Bush administration announced its intention to negotiate a free trade agreement with Thailand.  Thailand is the second leading producer of pickup trucks in the world.  The U.S. currently imposes a 25% tariff on imported pickup trucks.  If this tariff is removed, it could cost the U.S. tens of thousands of jobs.  We must urge our representatives and senators to send a letter to U.S. Trade Representative Rob Portman urging him not to put tens of thousands of jobs in jeopardy.

·        Election November 8:  Please know the positions on issues of the candidates you vote for in the upcoming elections.  With federal and state governments reducing contributions to local budgets, officials will be looking to replace those funds through added taxes/fees, and you could be affected.

·        Corwin Knife Sale:  We are taking orders for Union and American made Corwin knifes.

·        Meijer Gift Card Raffle:  We are selling raffle tickets for five $50 give cards.  Drawing is scheduled for Monday, December 12.

·        You could be a $10,000 Winner:  Have you purchased your CAP Dollar Drive tickets?  Region 1D will be giving away a total of $15,400 in cash prizes December 9 and Local 730 a total of $1500 in cash prizes at the December membership meeting.  Tickets are available from all elected or appointed UAW officials.  Ticket deadline is November 18.

Protecting our collective bargaining
