Volunteers Needed
As UAW Leaders and
Activists, we should be keenly aware of the benefits of our union
membership. These benefits are under attack and now is the time to take
action. Walter Reuther’s words, “What we gain at the bargaining
table, we can lose at the ballot box”, have never been more true.
If we are to stop the assaults on health care, the economy, worker safety,
the 40 hour work week, pensions, and job security, we need your
participation in our UAW election activities now and on Election Day with
the following::
Phone Banks:
Phoning is the most effective and efficient way to identify supporters and
issues of concern to our members.
Location: Kent CAP
Office - Phone 261-4878
4330 Stafford
SW, Wyoming, Michigan 49548
Coordinator:
Doug Nyman
Hours: 10 am to
9 pm Monday through Friday
10 am
to 2 pm Saturday
Labor-to-Labor Walks:
Every Saturday in October, these walks consist of a personal visit to union
households in “swing precincts”. Registration and training begins at 9 am
and returning by 2 pm.
Election Day:
We will need your
help on Election Day as well. Please contact the CAP Office as soon as
possible so you can be scheduled for Election Day activities.

Overtime Legislation
Update
The Harkin and Obey
overtime protection amendment has now passed the Senate and House by a House
vote of 223 to 193 September 13. All 200 Democrats and 1 Independent
voted in favor of this amendment; along with 22 Republicans. We must
continue to work to make sure these amendments are included in the final
versions of the FSC/ETI Tax Bill and the Labor-HHS-Education Appropriations
Bill. Many thanks to all UAW activists for their work in helping to
pass this amendment in the House.
FYI:
Did you know that by law union dues cannot be used to support any federal,
state, or local candidate? Our only means of monetary support for
labor-endorsed candidates is through voluntary contributions made through
the UAW V-CAP Check-off Program.
