UAW Local 730 Picnic

June 16, 2007

At 7:30 a.m. Saturday, June 16, the sky was clear and it was 65 degrees.  This week it has been in the high 80’s to 90’s and this day was going to be the same.  I drove to Grand Rapids hoping the rain would hold off until the end of the day.  Would the weatherman be right this time or not?  At Douglas Walker Park, a group of Local 730 members were working to set up the park for the Local picnic that was scheduled to begin at noon.  Bingo was going to be held outside this year, but they wanted to be in the shelter so we moved it inside where coffee and donuts were available.

There were two drawings held – one at 1:30 p.m. and one at 4:30 p.m. with prizes totaling over $4500.  All gifts given were U.S. made.  This is getting harder and harder each year.

This year we received donations from Classic Chevrolet, Todd Wenzel Pontiac, Harvey Cadillac, Berger Chevrolet, and Rivertown Credit Union (Stampers)

Hot dogs, hamburgers, and chicken were being grilled by Rollin Roasters.

Winners of the horseshoe tournament were:

1st Place:  Al Zamarripa and Emmanuel Zamarripa

2nd Place:  Mark Peterson and Jeremy Southwell

A good time was had by over 1300 members and their families.  As I drove home at 9:30, it was still 88 degrees….and still no rain that was forecast for the day.

I would like to thank all the volunteers – without you, we would not have a picnic.  See you next year!

Mark your calendars for:  Sunday, December 9, 2007        Christmas Party
