President’s Report by Barb Henderson

March 18, 2008

Healthy Heart Classes/Screening Dates

The Healthy Heart Awareness classes and screening cost $470, but is covered by Tuition Assistance.  A textbook/cd can be purchased for $10.  One class session is scheduled before the health screening and one class is scheduled after.  The health screening takes place in a mobile medical unit, which will be located in the parking lot at the union hall.  You will receive a confidential health report card sent directly to your home within three weeks following the health screening appointment.

 Class 1

The class is two hours in length and is an in-depth explanation of the heart and circulatory system and function.  The class continues with a thorough discussion of heart disease and stroke, and how they affect our lives.  Controllable and uncontrollable heart disease and stroke risk factors are presented as well.  An explanation of the health screening appointment is followed by videos of the three screenings. Finally, the instructor explains how to interpret the health report card each student will receive by mail.

  Health Screening

The screening takes place in a private examination room within the mobile screening unit located in the hall parking lot, and only takes about 20 minutes to perform.  Screenings will include an echocardiogram, carotid artery, ultrasound, and arterial stiffness index. Students are required to disrobe from the waist up (women are given a hospital gown to wear).  Each screening is confidential (following the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 Guidelines).  The report is sent directly to the home within three weeks.

 Class 2

Class two is two hours in length and typically takes place the week following the screening and continues with a discussion on how lifestyle affects heart and circulatory system health.  Students learn how changes in diet, exercise, and behavior can decrease their chance of developing heart disease and stroke, as well as, improving their health.
