UAW Local 730 President’s Report

October 2004 by Don Southwell

The November 2nd Presidential Election

Don’t Forget to Vote

On Tuesday, November 2nd we will be electing a new President for America.  Also, Represesntatives for U.S. Congress, State Representatives for the House and Senate, Local Representatives, and Judicial Candidates for the Courts in our State.

·        This election will determine the path America takes for the next decade.

·        This election will determine how we work.

·        Whether our jobs will stay in our community or go somewhere else.

·        If our kids will have an opportunity for the type of lifestyle we enjoy today, or if they will be working in the service industry for less.

You’ve heard all the conflicting claims by the candidates.  Who do you believe?  Who is telling you the truth, and who isn’t?  The UAW International Community Action Program (CAP) and the Education Department have spent a tremendous amount of time and money researching the issues and where the candidates stand on them.  They have examined the voting records of all the candidates that have one.

They look at how they have supported Labor and our issues.  They also look at our ability to access these representatives.  If they don’t answer our calls, letters, or e-mails, how can we get the things we need?

The Bush Administration doesn’t give us access.  We didn’t even get a reply when our International President Ron Gettelfinger sent a letter to President Bush about Labor’s concerns.  Bush didn’t even acknowledge his concerns for workers!

When we look at recent legislation, we see our tax dollars being used to help support shipping our jobs overseas or to a Right-to-Work state where workers are not unionized and have the right to work for less; a lot less!

Fraternally,

Don Southwell, President
