Community Service Report

January 2004

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

We would like to take this time and say thank you to everyone for their help over the holiday season.

Salvation Army Giving Tree

We always get a wonderful response for the Salvation Army Giving Tree. This year we were able to help 38 families with a total of 252 gifts. That was a tremendous task, and we did it with everyone’s help. The gifts were delivered December 13, with help from Tom McLean, Roger Chalk, their families, Don Southwell, and Rocky Love.

There were a few tags taken from the tree this year that gifts were not turned in. When this occurs, the committee purchases the gifts with monies from their fund. Unfortunately, we were short this year by $91, which was covered by a committee member. Word got out to one of our members, and thanks to them an anonymous donation was made to cover this amount. So whoever you are out there, thank you!

Salvation Army Bell Ringing

We were also able to collect $2200 for the Salvation Army during the Bell Ringing project held before the holidays.

How the Salvation Army Giving Tree Works

It was brought to my attention that with all the new people in our plant, some members do not know about the Salvation Army Giving Tree and how it works. We are asked to help families in our community by the Salvation Army. They screen families and then provide us with a list in November of families that need our help. With that list I make up tags that are placed on the Christmas tree.

We have helped the Salvation Army for over 15 years now. It is a wonderful tradition we have carried out, along with the Delphi plant in Wyoming. Thank you again.

Pop Can Barrels

We now have five barrels placed around the plant. The barrels are red, white, and blue and say Community Service on them. There use is for pop cans and bottles. The money we receive from this is used to buy all the gifts that are not taken off the Salvation Army Giving Tree. So please keep putting those cans and bottles in the barrels. It really adds up.

Hats and Mittens from Retiree’s

Another big thank you goes out to our retiree’s for all their help. Many hats and mittens were handmade by some very special retirees. Also, one retiree donated most of the yarn given to other retirees to knit with. Thank you again.

The hats and mittens were given to an organization called Path Finders. They have a Women and Children’s Shelter here. Path Finders help people find their way through life’s ups and downs, and get them started down a new path in life. Finding a helping hand is always a good thing. The hats will be used and greatly appreciated by all that receive them.

Committee Members Needed

Last of all I would like to invite new and old members to join us in helping serve our members and our community through our committee. We are in need of a few good men and women. We only have three members right now and would like three to four more. If you are interested, please let one of us know or stop by the union hall and leave your name and number.

Thank you again.
