Local Negotiations

The Shop Committee has been meeting with management one day a week, (Monday’s), but progress has been slow.  In order to move things along and bring our Local Agreement to a close, we met with local management last Friday and informed them they have five days to reach an agreement, and if not, a Five Day Strike Letter would be issued.

So starting Monday, April 14, we will be meeting daily and receiving assistance from the International Union to get the best Local Agreement we can procure for the membership, bringing this process to a close.

Layoffs

Currently, we have 575 members on layoff, with approximately 470 of those due to the American Axle strike - now in its sixth week.

I know many of our members have donated their time, money, and goods to the members of Local 2093, which is greatly appreciated.  Last Friday, I had the opportunity to walk the picket line for a couple of hours and deliver food and water.  They are in good spirits, but I would like to ask our members to continue their support in any way you can.

Asbestos

Starting Monday, April 14, there will be outside contractors in the plant performing cleanup on any loose asbestos and lead paint on affected windows from last winter.

Once that is completed, a ceramic base paint will be applied to the windows to contain the remaining caulk.  The windows are to be functional once this is done.  While our production areas are slow, they will be the first to be completed.

SAP’s

If you are considering taking one of the four packages that were rolled out in March, the last date to submit for this will be Thursday, May 22, 2008.  Once again, I cannot stress enough how important it is to discuss this very important decision with whomever you need to, whether it be family members or financial advisors, to make a decision you will not regret later.

Elections

I would like to remind our members and to mark your calendars - elections for Executive Board and Skilled Trade Delegates will be held from 5 am May 13 thru 5 am May 14, 2008.  If you are considering running for one of these positions, please run a clean campaign and good luck.

In solidarity,

Steve Rop
