October 2006

Transfers and Temporary Workers

Since our last membership meeting, a requisition for 100 production employees was approved, in which 24 came in on October 9.  We also agreed locally to allow some of the temps to be retained through the month of November if needed.

Leadership Conference

On September 25-27, Barb Henderson, Larry Palmer, and I attended a Region 1D Leadership Conference that included Local 730, Delphi plants, and IPS plants.  We had various speakers that were very motivational: UAW President Ron Gettelfinger, Vice President Terry Thurman, and Assistant Director Mike Bieber.  Also, reports were given by each Local.

Sub Councils

Barb, the Shop Committee, and I attended Sub Councils in Detroit, which were very informative.  We are not alone in dealing with the fallout from the loss of all our members due to the attrition package.  All of the other stamping plants have most of the same problems and issues that we are challenged with, but some to a more severe degree.

People Issues

It seems that lately we have had several instances where we have member against member disagreements or confrontations.  Sometimes it has been one-sided, and sometimes both parties are going back and forth.

I am asking the membership’s help in putting a stop to this behavior and take a step back and think about all of the repercussions.  We need all of our members together.  When we are divided, it is easier to be conquered.  We need to show a united front.

In solidarity,

UAW LOCAL 730
