December 2006

Meeting in Detroit

UAW Vice President Cal Rapson called for a meeting for all local union presidents and chairmen at the CHR in Detroit for Wednesday, December 13.  Cal told us that this will be the toughest set of negotiations that any of us will probably go through.

Temps

As of this meeting, we have 17 temps still working.  The temps that were released on December 11 and December 18, plus the ones still working will qualify for a bonus that will be paid to them in January.

Christmas Period

If you accept to work over Christmas, make sure you come in, because it could affect your holiday pay if you don’t show up.

Attrition

We will be losing around 200 members at the end of this year due to retirements.  I would like to thank you for your years of service and wish you a long, healthy, and safe retirement.  We still have a requisition in for more production people, but management is only interested in taking people from area hire at this time.

Cleaners and Janitors

Presently, we are having a problem with management not replacing people in these classifications who are retiring.  This issue is not just specific to this plant, it is a directive from WFG and is happening in other plants also.

Cost Savings

Management is always coming at the union wanting them to make sacrifices to reduce costs.  What I’m asking the membership to do is to ask your supervisor, planner, superintendent, or staff member what they are doing or willing to do to reduce costs instead of it always being on the backs of the members.

I want to wish all of you a safe and happy Christmas holiday period.

In solidarity,
